ENGINEERING ANALYSIS INC.
SITE-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS OF NEXRAD COVERAGE

With the advent of the Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) installation by the National Weather Service (NWS), many older weather radar systems are being deactivated. Such a process has caused many cities, for weather radar coverage, to become dependent on NEXRAD stations which are located at distances of fifty miles or more. The adequacy of such coverage has become a significant issue. For the cities of Huntsville, Alabama; Williston, North Dakota; and Evansville, Indiana we have carried out detailed analyses of the coverage provided by NEXRAD, taking account the effects of earth curvature, atmospheric refraction, local topography, and finite beam width. Our analysis carried out for Huntsville is credited with causing NWS to install a NEXRAD station at Hightop, Alabama to provide better coverage of the Huntsville area.
